SCHOLARSHIPS AND BURSARIES

 

 

Financial assistance is given to students in the form of bursaries and scholarships A scholarship or a bursary is awarded for one year in the first instance but may be renewed from year to year until the termination of the course. The Council may at any time withdraw or suspend a scholarship or a bursary on the recommendation by the Academic Affairs Board.

 

Mahapola Scholarships

The Mahapola Scholarship Fund provides assistance to deserving young students to enable them to pursue their academic, industrial or technical education at a Higher educational Institution. The main criteria adopted in awarding this scholarship are those laid down by the Mahapola Scholarship Trust Fund.

 

Bursaries

In awarding bursaries, the Council on the recommendation of the Academic Affairs Board,  takes into consideration the following eligibility criteria.

1. Eligibility criteria

When applying for a bursary the applicant;

 1.1   shall be a citizen of Sri Lanka.

 1.2   shall be a registered internal student in a full time course at the NISD.

 1.3   shall have a parental income equal to or less than Rs.240,000/per annum.

1.4   following concessions to be considered  along with income ceilings specified in 1.3

          a) Rs.15,000/per school going child up to a maximum of three children in a family.

  b) Rs.20,000/ per child following a course of study in any University or  Higher Educational Institution in Sri Lanka.  This criterion to be used to determine the eligibility of the 2nd child and downwards provided that the first child is not a recipient of a Bursary/Mahapola Scholarship.

1.5     If employed, student’s annual income shall be added to income of parents.

1.6     If employed and married, student and the spouse shall be considered as a separate family and her/his eligibility for bursaries shall be determined according to the rules and regulations specified in section 1.3 and 1.4.

1.7    If disabled, will be considered as a special category.

 

2. Once the applicant satisfies the eligibility criteria given in section 1 the application is checked on the basis of  a marking scheme. wherein marks are allocated for annual income of family, number of children/family and distance from student’s permanent residence to NISD, and a sum of Rs.2000/month is paid to those students who score 50% and above.

 

3.  Other conditions governing the payment of bursaries are;

3.1.Any student who provides false or inaccurate statements or who fails to disclose any material fact/s in his/her application is liable to have his/her bursary suspended and registration as an internal student cancelled.

 

3.2 .Students who apply for a bursary or who are in receipt of a bursary should communicate in writing to the   Registrar of the NISD or to the Director-General of the NISD in respect of any changes of family income,                          marital status, employment, etc

 

3.3.Students who are not in receipt of a bursary shall be given an opportunity to apply for a bursary if his/her parental  income changes due to natural or any other reason/s acceptable to the Registrar of NISD or Director-General of the NISD during his/her academic period.

 

3.4 The bursaries shall be paid only during the period of studentship at the NISD. A recipient of a bursary, for any reason,  temporarily ceases the course of study or leaves the NISD before the completion of the course of study should communicate that fact in writing to the Registrar of the NISD or the Director-General of the NISD as the case may be.

 

3.5 The payment of the bursary to any student may be completely stopped or temporarily suspended for any one or more of the following reasons.

3.5(a) If the student fails to pass any of the examinations,  however, the bursary may be paid to any student who has  been referred at the first year examinations and who is following the Bachelor’s degree courses prescribed for the second year.

                        3.5(b)  If the student does not pursue his/her studies diligently.

                        3.5(c)  If the student conducts himself/herself in an in-disciplined manner.

 

  • For any other valid reason, to be decided upon at the discretion of the Director-General of NISD.
  • NISD may use its discretion on matters relating to the restoration of bursaries which have been stopped or temporarily suspended.
  • Each eligible student will be paid a maximum of 10 monthly installments per academic year.

3.9 Conditions applicable to Mahapola scholarships are generally applicable to bursaries as well. No student in receipt of a Mahapola scholarship shall be awarded a Bursary.

3.10 The conditions governing bursaries as stated in para 3.1 to 3.8 should be incorporated in  the application form given to students.
